National Nutrition Month – June 2025
Theme: “Vegetables and Fruits: Always Keep You Healthy”
National Nutrition Month 2025, organized by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, will be launched this June under the theme “Vegetables and Fruits: Always Keep You Healthy.” The initiative aims to raise awareness about the health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption and promote sustainable, nutritious dietary habits across Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka continues to face a triple burden of malnutrition—undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies—despite various health improvements. Regular intake of fruits and vegetables, rich in essential nutrients and dietary fiber, can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases and support overall well-being. However, current consumption levels remain well below national recommendations.
This year’s campaign will focus on empowering the public and schoolchildren to improve their daily diets and create environments that promote healthy food choices.
Key Objectives:
- Increase public awareness of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables.
- Encourage individuals, especially children, to include more of them in their daily diet.
- Advocate for environments that support easy access to fruits and vegetables.
Key messages include,
- Adopt the “5-per-Day” habit – Consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, including two vegetables, one green leafy vegetable and two fruits.
- Minimize processing during the preparation of vegetables and fruits to preserve their nutritional value.
- Choose locally available low-cost fruits and vegetables: Seasonal produce, fruits and vegetables provide a natural balance of nutrients and enhance dietary diversity of the diet.
- Consume fruit and vegetables as healthy snacks.
Vegetables and fruits are a fundamental source of nutritious, inexpensive, quality food. Therefore, make them a must-have in your daily diet and take steps today to gift a healthy future to the whole family.
